6G-MUSICAL Returns to University of Oulu’s Sustainability Week for a Second Year!
For the second consecutive year, the 6G-MUSICAL project contributed to Sustainability Week at the University of Oulu, with an interactive stand titled “ICT & 6G: Towards a Sustainable Digital Future” at the Linnanmaa campus.
Building on its participation in 2025, this year’s initiative continued to engage students, researchers and university staff in discussions on the sustainability of digital technologies and the role of future 6G systems.
Organised jointly by the Martti Ahtisaari Institute, Oulu Business School, and the Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC), the initiative builds on momentum from previous years, strengthening multidisciplinary research and the University’s commitment to student engagement, critical reflection, and responsible technological development.
This year’s stand, held within the framework of the 6G-MUSICAL project (SNS JU), invited students, researchers, and university staff to explore how digital technologies, from ICT systems to emerging 6G and Joint Communication & Sensing (JCAS) innovations, intersect with sustainability across environmental, social, and economic pillars.
Continuity in Engagement, Growth in Insight
Building on the 2025 initiative, the 2026 stand continued to raise awareness of the environmental, social and economic dimensions of digitalisation. Through interactive demonstrations and discussions, participants explored the sustainability challenges and opportunities associated with ICT and future 6G technologies, while reflecting on how digital systems can be developed responsibly, efficiently and inclusively.
By returning for a second year, 6G-MUSICAL continued to connect its research with the university community, encouraging informed discussion and greater awareness of sustainability in the digital future.
Voices from the Community
“Our aim is to keep the conversation alive, to ensure students and staff remain part of the evolving dialogue on sustainable digital futures,” said Marja Matinmikko‑Blue. She highlighted that sustainability in 6G is not a one‑time topic but a continuous journey of research, reflection, and collaboration.
Research Progress and Shared Learning
The stand showcased new insights from the 6G‑MUSICAL project, including developments in:
- Energy‑efficient multi‑band communication and sensing
- Sustainable network architectures and resource optimisation
- Business and regulatory perspectives for responsible 6G deployment
These discussions reinforced the University’s role as a leading hub for sustainability‑driven 6G research and showed how academic work can meaningfully connect with student learning and campus-wide awareness.
A Growing Community and a Growing Dialogue
Supported by the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering and the Centre for Wireless Communications, the event reaffirmed the University’s commitment to aligning technological innovation with sustainability goals.
The stand served as a vibrant meeting point, a space where curiosity, research, and responsible innovation continue to meet.
