On 28th of September 2025, UCL (Dr Kari Clark) and MENHIR Photonics AG (Dr Andrea Pertoldi) presented a poster at ECOC 2025 titled “Synchronous Clock and RF Carrier Transmission for Radio Access Network Fronthaul”, focusing on innovative synchronisation methods for 6G radio access networks (RANs).

Their prototype achieved picosecond-level clock synchronisation and ultra-low phase noise radio frequency (RF) carriers—key for:

• Centimetre-precision device positioning

• Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC)

• High-capacity wireless communication

The approach combines optical frequency comb distribution, clock phase caching, and single-photodiode co-reception, enabling all radio units to share a single high-quality optical oscillator.

This research contributes to the 6G-MUSICAL project’s goal of developing reliable, high-precision 6G networks.
